A Traditional Meets Modern Family Home: Client Project

I have been working with my lovely clients for the past several months to furnish and decorate several rooms in their traditional meets modern family home including the open concept dining and living room, rec room and more recently a nursery for their sweet baby girl. Although the bones of the home are traditional in style, their personal style leans a bit more modern, fun and laid-back, much like their personalities. They have a pet dog and a new baby so we focused on comfort and function while maintaining an updated, fresh look. We merged affordable, casual pieces and accessories with a few investment pieces to create a look and feel that is approachable yet refined.

I’ll share more on the rec room and nursery later this week but today is all about the open concept dining and living space.

A Traditional Meets Modern Family Home: Dining Room

I was thrilled to learn that my client loves earthy tones including green and terra-cotta hues. In the dining room, we used copper-colored carpet tiles to create an area rug, which affords the flexibility to replace individual tiles instead of an entire rug in the event of damage. I love this idea for families with children.

The curtains add a bit of pattern and textured shimmer to the room and tie in with the color of the rug, as well as the living room decor which you’ll see below.

In most of my projects, clients have pieces of their own they’d like to incorporate into the design. The light fixture, large mirror and matted art were preexisting but work well in the room.

The dining room table, matching wood chairs and bench are Crate & Barrel and the upholstered head chairs are Restoration Hardware.

We accessorized the dining table with modern ceramic vases filled with lemon branches.

A Traditional Meets Modern Family Home: Living Room

The living area is in the heart of my clients home and featured preexisting built-ins. The sectional was a piece that my clients had before they brought me in. It is comfortable and fit the scale of the room so we decided to keep it. Everything else in the space is new.

We started with a gorgeous earth-toned rug which ties in nicely with the dining room decor.

A pair of gorgeous accent chairs with a cane frame adds texture and contrast to the upholstered sectional.

A tall floor mirror from Restoration Hardware and a faux olive tree fill a corner nook in the living room.

We accessorized the space with a mix of new and vintage throw pillows, throw blankets and faux greenery.

To decorate the built-ins, I selected props and decor in a neutral palette and mix of textures. I sourced vases, photo frames, candlesticks, baskets, wood bowls, books, etc and combined with some of my client’s existing decor.

The rug and some of the furniture are sold to-the-trade only. If you’d like the same rug, feel free to get in touch, I can order for you.

More from this traditional meets modern family home coming soon.
