Nursery Bathroom Makeover Reveal

It’s finally time to reveal the nursery bathroom makeover! We decided to attack this bathroom after working so hard to turn our barely used catch-all bedroom into a nursery for our little gal. The bathroom was in pretty rough shape so we figured since we’d be getting a lot of use out of the nursery, we may as well tackle the ensuite bathroom. Since it wasn’t really in our plan, we wanted to redo the bathroom on a budget and gave ourselves $3k. Even though in the end we went over budget, we collected a few money-saving tips along the way.

Nursery Bathroom Before and After

I knew early on that I wanted to use penny tile in the bathroom. Penny tile feels so classic and farmhouse to me and I thought it would be cute in a kids room. We replaced some of the white tiles with light and dark gray tiles to create a pattern for some added detail and interest.

Removing the soffit box above the vanity was one decision that put us over budget but it was worth it. There was an exposed vent pipe and some electrical hiding in the soffit that we had to contend with, so we purchased a faux beam to cover it.

The new vanity is higher than the old one so we had to remove and rehang the mirror several inches higher.

We scored a remnant piece of black granite from the countertop company we worked with in our kitchen. I didn’t plan on granite because it’s not really my favorite but it’s what they had and it’s purely black with no variation so that won me over.

Instead of replacing the bathtub and tile, we had them reglazed which saved us thousands. We hired it out, but you can read all about that process in the blog post linked here. New tub and shower fixtures worked wonders to freshen up the look of the tub but once we got into the wall we learned the piping was out of date. We hired a plumber to update everything necessary and it carried a $750 price tag which was ultimately the biggest thing to push us over budget.

We replaced the closet door with a bifold door to soften the awkwardness of two doors in the small space.

Yes, we went over budget mostly due to the unforeseen plumbing issue and the decision to remove the soffit box and invest in the beam. $3k was an optimistic budget for what we wanted to do in the space. I think we struck a balance between investing in good pieces and cutting a couple of corners and we’re happy with the end result. I have a follow-up blog post coming with tips and tricks for saving money in a bathroom renovation to stay tuned.
