Have you ever wondered how to hang a gallery wall? Well, let me help. There is a large wall in the guest bedroom that I was trying to figure out what to do with. After weighing some options and conducting a poll on Instagram, I decided to do a gallery wall. I had some existing vintage brass picture frames and decided to mix them with streamlined black frames. The room has black curtain rods and brass light fixtures so I wanted to carry those two finishes into the gallery wall. Since I was using a variety of sizes and finishes, I wanted my gallery wall to be asymmetrical. But how would I figure out how to hang them?

How to Hang a Gallery Wall

Here’s my fool-proof method for how to hang a gallery wall. Whether you use photos or art, this method is super easy and fun too.

Step 1: Make a Template

First, make a template of the frames you plan to use on your gallery wall. You can use poster board, craft paper, or whatever you have on hand. I like to use cardboard so the templates are not flimsy.

Step 2: Apply Blue Stik Putty to the Templates

Next, tear off small pieces of Blue Stik putty, roll it in a ball and stick it to one side of the posters in at least 3 corners. This makes it easy to switch between horizontal and vertical when experimenting with the layout.

Step 3: Line Up Your Templates

After all your picture frame poster boards have blue putty dots, I like to line them up from largest to smallest along the wall so you can see what you’re working with. At this point, I recommend marking the center of the wall so you have a reference.

Step 4: Play Around with Layout

Once they’re all lined up, start playing around with the layout by sticking the templates to the wall. The beauty of the Blue Stik putty is that you can move them around on the wall until you have a configuration that you like. The putty adhesive sticks to the wall without damaging it so you’re not glued to your decision. See what I did there?

Step 5: Install Anchors and Hang Your Frames

Let it sit for a day or two and revisit it to make sure you are happy with the layout. Taking a picture to reference is a good trick too. The perspective is a little different when you see it in a photo. Once you are happy with the layout, you can start hanging your frames. The posters act as a great guide when you’re installing anchors, too.
