Last fall my sweet friend Rana of Roohi Photography went and got herself a new, spacious studio space and I’m flattered that she asked me to help with the design. Her new and improved contemporary photography studio has been finished for a while but we just recently got around to photographing it, so today I’m finally showing it off!!

The studio is about 900 sq ft total and is divided into two equally sized rooms. The front room has a full wall of floor to ceiling windows that provide amazing natural light. We divided the room into two zones, a comfy lounge area with a mounted TV for client consultations and presentations, and a more formal area with a dining table and cafe chairs. contemporary photography studio contemporary photography studio client presentation area

The change that made the biggest impact in the makeover was replacing the ceiling tiles. The old ones were basic office ceiling tiles (you know the ones) but replacing them with these traditional style white tiles really elevated the space and gave it a polished look. We also removed the fluorescent lighting and wired for two statement pendant lights instead. Fresh paint on the walls and new, upgraded baseboards finished off the space.

She wanted to keep the big pieces in the space mostly neutral and allow the photography to shine and provide pops of color throughout the space. contemporary photography studio

To soften the light from the windows and provide some privacy, we hung white curtains along the entire front wall of windows. They filter the light yet are not too think that it blocks the light. contemporary photography studio sofa with layered textilescontemporary photography studioThe clean lines and white lacquer definitely articulate a contemporary photography studio feel, while lush layered textures help soften the look. contemporary photography studio lounge contemporary photography studio

The back room of the studio serves as a dressing room area and a shooting space. Rana shoots mostly high school seniors and she needed an area to house her growing collection of dresses and accessories for her clients to choose from on shoot day.
