You guysssss! I am so excited to share that after 5 years of living in our home, we are finally adding a garage! That’s right, we don’t have a garage here. Heck, we don’t even have a paved driveway. Since we bought the house we have longed for both of those things! Last year we were gearing up to add a pool, but we shifted gears and decided it would be wiser to do the garage first since it would not only add more value to our home but improve the way we live in our home. Around that time, we purchased an acre of land next to our property, making the garage addition more realistic. Several months ago we started the preliminary search for a contractor. We found one we liked and began working with their architect to draft plans. We had to revise them significantly a few times due to the rising cost of building materials but we finally approved a set of plans and signed the contract.
The Farmhouse Garage Addition Project Plans
Not only are we adding a much-needed garage space, but it will be connected to our home so we will be gaining some additional heated square footage as well. While the garage itself is exciting, I’m mostly excited about what we’re planning to do within that added space. Before I go any further, here are some drawings.
As you can see above, part of our porch off of the dining room will be demolished and enclosed. The breezeway will be constructed off of the existing porch and the garage will be connected to the home via the breezeway.
The garage is an oversized 3-car garage with a pull-through garage bay on the left side. The garage measures 44×29 and will have plenty of room for not only our cars but the tractor and golf cart and a workbench area for Mike.
Breezeway
The breezeway will be completely enclosed and will become heated square footage. Within the breezeway, we will create a mudroom and a small office. You may remember we created a small mudroom back in 2018 when we did our kitchen renovation. Once the breezeway addition is constructed, our existing mudroom will become an extension of the pantry. The plans and placement for the mudroom and office will unfold in the coming months.
Storage Room
The area off of the dining room that is labeled as storage will become storage for….wine! We are planning to create a small wine cellar in that space and I’m pretty excited about it. I’ve never designed a wine room but I have some ideas and have pinned a lot of gorgeous inspiration.
Farmhouse Garage Addition Project: Exterior Design
Let’s talk about the exterior elevation. I have been pinning for this project for years. I have a Pinterest board dedicated to inspiration images for the exterior. Here’s a rough idea of what the addition will look like next to our existing home. I should mention here that we originally wanted to add a second level with finished space above the garage but it was waaaaay outside of the budget.
As far as exterior finishes, the roof of the addition will be galvanized metal to match our existing home. The garage doors will be upgraded carriage-style doors. The breezeway and garage will be a mix of board and batten, brick and siding to match our existing home. These examples give you a great idea of the direction we’re heading:
The main body of the garage will be white (SW Alabaster) to match our house. The garage doors will be similar to the example above and painted black (SW Tricorn) to match our front door. The breezeway will also be painted black.
These examples demonstrate the recessed garage bays that we will have on either side. During drafting after we nixed the second level, the garage was falling a little flat next to our house so this is one of the ways we chose to add some interest and detail to the garage design.
Farmhouse Garage Addition Project Process
The plans are finalized and sealed (with the exception of a few non-structural changes), and a permit has been submitted. Permitting will take several weeks so we won’t actually break ground until early in the new year. In the meantime, we have some decisions to make regarding window type and placement, flooring materials, garage door selections, etc. I also need to figure out exactly where I want to place the interior walls of the breezeway and wine storage areas. Otherwise, we had a tree that was interfering with the garage build so we trimmed it back. Now we wait.
I am so pumped to finally be doing this addition. It’s going to be a game-changer in many ways and improve the way we live in our house. Not to mention the curb appeal! I can’t wait to take you all along throughout the process. Do you have any questions that I can answer?
