The Reveal of our Moody Guest Bedroom Makeover

The Reveal of our Moody Guest Bedroom Makeover

The reveal of our moody guest bedroom makeover is here! I explained our plan to redo this room for the second time and why in this post.  We removed wallpaper, sampled a gazillion paint swatches, decided on a dark moody color, added a gallery wall, new furnishings, decor….and here we are.

The Reveal of our Moody Guest Bedroom Makeover

After pulling inspiration from the gorgeous rug and sampling many paint swatches, we decided on a dark green/gray shade “kitty gray” by Benjamin Moore. To add a bit of visual interest, we added a decorative trim below the crown molding and painted the upper portion of the room a lightened version of the gray.

The star of the room is the turned four-poster bed. It feels vintage and farmhouse-y and I love how it pops against the dark walls.

The wood nightstands add some needed warmth to the room.… Read more

How to Hang a Gallery Wall

How to Hang a Gallery Wall

Have you ever wondered how to hang a gallery wall? Well, let me help. There is a large wall in the guest bedroom that I was trying to figure out what to do with. After weighing some options and conducting a poll on Instagram, I decided to do a gallery wall. I had some existing vintage brass picture frames and decided to mix them with streamlined black frames. The room has black curtain rods and brass light fixtures so I wanted to carry those two finishes into the gallery wall. Since I was using a variety of sizes and finishes, I wanted my gallery wall to be asymmetrical. But how would I figure out how to hang them?

How to Hang a Gallery Wall

Here’s my fool-proof method for how to hang a gallery wall. Whether you use photos or art, this method is super easy and fun too.

Step 1: Make a Template

First, make a template of the frames you plan to use on your gallery wall. You can use poster board, craft paper, or whatever you have on hand.… Read more

How to Remove Wallpaper

How to Remove Wallpaper

We kicked off a makeover of our guest bedroom and the first task on the to-do list was to remove the existing wallpaper. How to remove wallpaper is not difficult, it’s just tedious and requires some patience. We tried a couple of different methods and this is what worked best for us.

How to Remove Wallpaper

What you need:

  • Wallpaper Steamer
  • Scoring Tool
  • Plastic Putty Knife (we didn’t need to use with our removal method)
  • Wall Texture Spray (if required)
  • Old Towels
  • Trash Bin Nearby
  • Lots of time 😉

First, score the wallpaper using the scoring tool. This perforates the wallpaper allowing the steam to penetrate the paper and reach the wallpaper adhesive easily.

We scoured the wallpaper using a circular movement.

The next step is to steam the wallpaper. The wallpaper steamer heats up the adhesive and allows the wallpaper to be peeled off. First, allow the steamer to heat up, which can take 15-20 minutes. Using the largest steam plate, hold the plate on the wallpaper for a minute or so and move to the next section.

We found that it was easier and quicker to remove the patterned part of the paper first, and then steam off the backing.… Read more

Guest Bedroom Makeover Introduction and My Design Process

Guest Bedroom Makeover Introduction and My Design Process

I shared on Instagram my plans for a makeover of our guest bedroom. We decorated and furnished the room as part of the One Room Challenge back in 2017. Since then, my style has evolved. At the time I was having a boho moment and we piecemealed what we had to furnish the room. Now it’s time for a little refresh! I want the room to feel less playful and more grown-up. I’m going for a collected farmhouse vibe with some drama in the paint. I’m considering a dark or bold color.  A guest room is a great space to have some fun in. I am also considering a simple wall treatment, perhaps a chair or picture rail and/or crown molding.

My Design Process

It’s very early in the design process and I have only nailed down a couple of pieces for the room so I’m going to talk a little about my design process. This is the gist of how I approach designing a new space for myself or for a client.

Step 1: Ask yourself how you want the space to feel.

Modern Boho Guest Room REVEAL: One Room Challenge Week 6

Modern Boho Guest Room REVEAL: One Room Challenge Week 6

Guest Room Reveal!

You guys, I’m so flippin’ excited to share the BIG REVEAL of our modern boho guest bedroom that we’ve been working on over the last several weeks as part of the One Room Challenge. We had some stagnant weeks in the middle due to some other projects that required our attention (and there may have been a weekend away by the pool that didn’t help). I was not quite sure we’d make it but that’s all history now because WE DID IT! It wasn’t without blood, sweat and tears but we. did. it.

Let’s jump in, shall we? But first, in case you’re just joining us and haven’t been following along with our makeover, here’s a flashback of what the room looked like before. And here it is now!!

Overall, I wanted the room to feel peaceful and relaxing yet, I wanted to make a bold statement without going too over the top, and the wallpaper is perfect for what I was going for. I kept the baseline color palette neutral and added pops of color in the accessories, like the throw blanket, the rug and the pillows. … Read more

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 5! CLOSE, YET SO FAR!

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 5! CLOSE, YET SO FAR!

One Week Until the REVEAL!

I can’t believe it’s week 5 of the One Room Challenge! If you remember from last week’s post, the wallpaper is up, but we still had plenty to do, most of which I’m happy to say we accomplished! WHEW! We installed the baseboards, caulked and painted the baseboards, finished painting the walls that are not getting wallpapered, changed out the electrical receptacles and installed new door hardware. Here’s a shot of the mess, I mean the room, mid-baseboard install. And after with the new outlets, which have USB ports which I think is a great feature! And finally, the baseboard work was complete and it was time to start cleaning the floors and start the FUN STUFF! Like installing lighting! Originally I planned to go with modern fixtures in brass but I decided since we were doing black door hardware (keeping consistent with the rest of the house) that I would stick to a simpler palette in here since we all know the wallpaper is stealing the show. I don’t want it to feel too overwhelming and busy with many different finishes, especially since some of my accessories are colorful.… Read more

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 4: WALLPAPER IS UP!

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 4: WALLPAPER IS UP!

Week 4 One Room Challenge Update!

I can’t believe it’s week 4 of the One Room Challenge! Time is flying and we have just one more update before the reveal in 2 WEEKS! This week, it’s all about the cactus wallpaper!

Progress

Our ORC progress report grade for this week is a C-. Our minor stall in progress from last week continued into this week since we were distracted with painting the 2nd story exterior of our house! Oye vey. That project was a bit more time consuming and labor intensive than we anticipated so our to-do list for the guest bedroom did not get done (more on the exterior later). The plan was to have the baseboards and painting done and all the electrical receptacles replaced, to make way for the wallpaper installation. We did not get the baseboards in yet but we opted to go ahead and have our cactus wallpaper installed, so the WALLPAPER IS UP folks! Normally you would install baseboards and any trim before wallpaper so that the wallpaper hanger can cut directly along the top edge of the baseboard.… Read more

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 3: MODERN BOHO GUEST BEDROOM

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE WEEK 3: MODERN BOHO GUEST BEDROOM

One Room Challenge: Modern Boho Guest Bedroom

It’s week 3 of the One Room Challenge! I can’t believe it! We’re in the middle of our modern boho guest bedroom makeover but let me start by saying we did not get all of the to-do list done since our last update. Wah wah. We had to push the wallpaper install a week because we didn’t install the baseboards yet. Sometimes life just happens, #amiright?

Painting is almost Done!

We’re pretty much done with all of the trim and door painting so here’s a few updated progress pics.
This is the small hallway coming into the room, the bathroom is on the left and the walk-in closet is on the right. So much better, right? Above you can see the progress on the window trim and that door is to another small closet in the room. Ahhhhh brightness!
Here is the huge wall of windows with all of the trim painted. We’re using Sherwin Williams Alabaster, which is the shade of white we’re carrying throughout the rest of the house. If you remember from my last post,  we’re not wallpapering this wall of windows because of how many more rolls we’d need, and the amount that would be wasted after cutting it for the windows.  … Read more

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: WEEK 2

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: WEEK 2

One Room Challenge: Modern Boho Bedroom

Last week I shared my plans to participate in the One Room Challenge, a biannual event hosted by Calling it Home in which a bunch of designers and bloggers redo one room in six weeks, blogging updates about it weekly. I decided to participate because I thought a deadline would force me to finish the upstairs guest room…we’ll see how that goes. Check out last week’s post to see the all before pics of the room and the plan to make this room into a modern boho bedroom oasis.

Wallpaper Update!

As of last week I couldn’t decide which color of the Aimee Wilder cactus wallpaper to use. We’re going with “desert” color in the middle, which is white and a tannish hue they call oatmeal. While I love this wallpaper in the green and pink, I decided to go more neutral since it’s such a busy print and we are doing all of the walls.  Well, most of the walls. We’re not doing the hallway or the wall with all of the windows because I would have needed an additional 3 rolls just for the window wall and so much of the paper would have been left unused.… Read more

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE SPRING 2017 WEEK 1: MODERN BOHO BEDROOM

ONE ROOM CHALLENGE SPRING 2017 WEEK 1: MODERN BOHO BEDROOM

One Room Challenge: Week 1 (The Before)

Heya friends! I’m so excited to be participating in the One Room Challenge, an event hosted by Linda over at Calling it Home twice a year in spring and fall in which 20 design bloggers redo a room and blog about the process weekly for six weeks, revealing the finished product in the final week. Anyone with a blog can be a guest participant and redo a room while blogging weekly updates, so that’s what I’ll be doing. 🙂

For my One Room Challenge, I’ll be redoing the…..drummroll please….guest bedroom! It’s been a couple months since our dining room reveal so I’m pumped to get the ball rolling on the guest room! Alright, let’s show ya the room.

Guest Room: Way Before

This is what the room looked like when we closed on the house. You may remember from my intro post about the #dalydigs that we spent closing day ripping out all the nasty carpet. Yup, that’s what happens when you buy a fixer upper…rather than celebrating with champagne the day we finally closed, we were knee deep in disgusting carpet.… Read more
