The Details About Our DIY Rock Landscaping

The Details About Our DIY Rock Landscaping

For our One Room Challenge patio makeover, we started landscaping along the house. If you recall from our 2018 project list, landscaping was something we planned to get to this year. We assumed we’d hire out but when the One Room Challenge forced us to get a move on the nasty weed beds beside the patio, we DIYed it and it wasn’t so bad…well, besides shoveling all those heavy rocks out of the truck. That was bad. Nonetheless, we successfully started our DIY rock landscaping so I today I’m sharing all the details.

First things first, I am not a fan of mulch and we prefer rocks. While I love flowers, I prefer a simplistic landscaping look that doesn’t include a lot of flowers. Here are a couple inspiration images to give you an idea.

Here is where we started! The “flower beds” had been washed out and overrun with weeds.

The first task in our DIY rock landscaping journey was to get rid of all those weeds.

Next, we had to add some topsoil and mulch.… Read more

The Easy Way to Paint French Doors you Need to Know About

The Easy Way to Paint French Doors you Need to Know About

If you’ve been following along with our patio makeover for the One Room Challenge, then you know that I painted the two sets of french doors and the single side door going that goes out to our patio. All of those doors are gridded doors with 15 glass panels, you know the ones. I was dreading painting the doors…that is, until I discovered an easy way to paint french doors!

I speak from experience when I say that painting french doors is a pain in the butt. You have to either tape off the glass on each window grid, which is super annoying, time-consuming and doesn’t always prevent the paint from bleeding onto the glass, or you just paint the grids getting as little as possible on the glass and scraping it off with a razor blade after it dries. Having painted the interior of all of those french doors, I know that either way is not fun. This time around, I did a little research and discovered a pretty cool product that offers an easy way to paint french doors.… Read more

Opalhouse, Target’s New Collection Hit the Stores!

Did you go to Target over the weekend? If so, you may have seen their new collection Opalhouse, which hit the shelves yesterday. This is by far the collection I’m most excited about. Target does a great job changing things up and appealing to the masses, from Magnolia’s Hearth & Hand farmhouse-y vibe to Project 62’s modern aesthetic. Opalhouse is all about eclectic style. It’s actually three collections in one, all with a global, wanderlust feel. Right up my alley!

Here are some of my faves from the Opahouse collection…some of these are definitely going to end up in my shopping cart!

Rattan Plant Stand / Carved Wood Candleholders / Rattan Bench / Woven Strap Headboard / Pouf / Pom Pom Lumbar Pillow / Wedding Quilt Bedding

Happy shopping!… Read more

24 Outdoor Sofas I’m loving for Spring

24 Outdoor Sofas I’m loving for Spring

Spring is in the air and I’m itching to finish our back patio! I thought I had decided on the sofa I was going to select, but then IKEA threw a curveball, so I’m trying to hold out until the HAVSTEN comes out in stores so I can scope it out in person before I decide. As usual, my hunt for outdoor sofas took me down a rabbit hole, so I thought I’d share a roundup of outdoor sofas here on the blog. I broke them up into three price groups, under $500, $500-$1000, and over $1000.

I actually really, really love option 5 above and had it as a placeholder in my patio design plan. It’s a great budget-friendly outdoor sofa, IMO.

Favorites from IKEA’s Summer Collection

Favorites from IKEA’s Summer Collection

I’ll admit, I have a love-hate relationship with IKEA. One one hand, IKEA is a great source for affordable accessories and great rug and pillow options, but anyone that’s assembled some IKEA furniture knows that it’s not always worth the inexpensive price tag. I have been pretty impressed with IKEA lately though. Last year’s boho line, the currently trending STOCKHOLM chair, and now IKEA’s summer collection, inspired by entertaining and relaxing at home, is on point.

IKEA’s Summer Collection Faves

IKEA summer collection

This award-winning outdoor sofa has me VERY excited! I love its lines and minimalistic metal frame. I’m really considering waiting for IKEA’s summer launch to finish my back patio so that I can have this sofa.

Emphasizing backyard lounging, neighborhood cookouts and warm summer nights under the stars, IKEA’s summer line is all about casual and effortless entertaining at home. The line includes solar-powered lighting options, outdoor pendants, pillow covers in vibrant summer hues, minimal stoneware dishes, several new planter models and of course, some show-stopping outdoor furniture.

Despite my feelings about IKEA, it’s summer catalog is chock full of inspiration and some innovative pieces.… Read more

Mastering the Guest Welcome Tray

Mastering the Guest Welcome Tray

I love the idea of putting together a guest welcome tray in the guest bedroom. Why not bring a little hotel hospitality into the home? It’s a great way to greet your guests with a warm welcome and you can even personalize it for an extra special touch. I styled a guest welcome tray for my guest bedroom reveal, and I’d love to revisit that and share some ideas for what to include on a welcome tray.

Guest Welcome Tray Ideas

I definitely think there are some things that should always be included on a guest welcome tray. Flowers and a water carafe for sure. From there you can add items such as spa slippers, extra toothbrushes (bonus points if they’re cute like these bamboo ones), hand lotion, a bar of soap, shampoo & conditioner, a candle, a match striker, a folded robe, a sweet treat of some kind or even a bottle of wine and wine glasses.

You can also add a little welcome note or tag, similar to the examples above. If you opt for a note or tag, including the wifi password is a good idea.… Read more

Pantone Color of the Year

Pantone Color of the Year

Did you guys hear about the new Pantone color of the year for 2018? Ultra violet it is!

color of the year

There is a whole backstory on Pantone’s selection their yearly color. And lots of people have thoughts on what it means – like this interesting, albeit slightly political take from Refinery 29. Ingenuity, unity, feminism – whether or not you are into the analysis of the color “ultra violet” and it’s meaning, one thing is for sure, we’ll be seeing a lot more of this color. Pantone’s color of the year typically manifests in fashion, decor and wedding trends.

I’ll be honest, I’m not too sure about this year’s Pantone color of the year. I’m not really a purple person but I am intrigued to see how people are going to use it. I think subtle accents is the best way to use this vibrant shade. I’ve rounded up a few ways I’ve seen purple used in home decor that I think work and a few home decor accents that feature the 2018 Pantone color of the year.

This slab is super unique and has subtle shades of purple in the veining.… Read more

Modern Farmhouse Holiday Porch Decor

Modern Farmhouse Holiday Porch Decor

Can you believe Christmas is almost here!?! These last few months have really flown by. I was very reluctant to throw out my pumpkins and put away the fall decor (I waited until December 1st) but I finally decked the halls a little bit around here and put out some holiday porch decor. We’re traveling over the holidays this year so we did not buy a big tree or decorate inside, but I do like to keep our porch current with seasonal decor, especially since we’ve done so much to improve the look of the exterior of the house. So, here’s how we decorated our modern farmhouse exterior with some holiday porch decor 🙂

Holiday Porch Decor

I kept it very simple. I picked up a couple of real wreaths from the Christmas tree tent for our main entry and tied bows using black and white plaid ribbon. I also grabbed a couple poinsettias – I’m not typically a poinsettia fan but since our rug has some red and maroon tones I thought it would work. I think it’s imperative that you take the poinsettias out of the cheesy plastic wrap they come in and put them in a different container.… Read more
